Chapter 13 of 16 · 6 min

Upkeep and safety

Assets and their maintenance schedules, breakdown tickets that take a court out of play, repair costs, and safety checklists that record what was actually found.

Assets and schedules

Maintenance keeps the things you own — a pump, a net post, the floodlights — and the preventive work each needs on a schedule. The next visit is counted from the day the last one was done, not from the day it was due, so a schedule that slipped once does not slip forever.

Tickets

A breakdown is a ticket. A critical ticket takes the court out of service by placing a block on the calendar, through the same door a booking uses, so the desk cannot sell a court with a hole in it. Resolving the ticket lifts the block. The cost of a repair is an expense on the day it is done.

Safety checklists

A pool chemistry log, a daily court walk, a monthly fire-equipment check: each is a checklist for a sport, run daily, weekly or monthly, with yes/no questions you write yourself. “Extinguisher present? No” is a valid answer describing a real problem; it is recorded as a failed check rather than refused, because refusing would leave no record that anyone looked. A check keeps the verdict it was given at the time.
